Eat Real in the Summertime…

Wow is it really almost October already?!! Man time sure does fly by when you’re out of the country for 3 weeks! I just got back from my trip to Korea & Japan! Let’s see if I can get to posting these photos up before 2012! That’s very ambitious considering I have never fully posted all my photos from Japan trips 07′ & 09′ :P

Anyways back in JULY during the weekend of Carmageddon, I checked out the Eat Real Festival in Culver City. I had such an awesome experience from the previous year in Oakland, so I was excited to see what Southern California could cook up! This wasn’t your typical food festival of long lines waiting at food trucks. There were a mix of vendors selling hot foods, a market to purchase goodies to take home, and of course some LA food trucks. Food demonstrations were held throughout the day showing you where your food came from or how to make something. It’s all about learning and appreciating the art of food craft! Best of all was the free admission with everything priced around $5 and under!

And…she LIVES!

Pardon my absence from this blog. I was without internet for a good 3 weeks thanks to my modem who decided  to call it quits. My tech fail skillz +/- laziness didn’t help remedy the situation either. Then life decided to fast forward on me and got real busy. Now I find myself still in a constant hustle and bustle before I leave for my Birthday Korea/Japan trip in a week!

I’m going to try and churn out all the blog posts from my summer this week. July was full of fun foodie events, craft fairs, musicals, and Disneyland!

At the beginning of July, Jamie paid a quick visit to SF! We got rush tickets to see Billy Elliott the musical. Devoured sweet and savory pies at Chile Pies & Ice Cream. And stayed at Hotel Tomo, the best Best Western Hotel ever. Leave it to the Japanese to 1-up whatever Americans do.

My Hippy Dippy Green Smoothie!

Once upon a time I decided I was going to go on a “as vegetarian/vegan/raw as possible” diet. That worked for about…4 days. Why the need for a drastic change in diet?

  1. I was getting too chubs. The lifestyle of a Food Mistress without exercise was catching up to me. I also blame the natural process of aging. *curse my dying metabolism*
  2. For the past year I’ve been experiencing a lot of nausea and various GI problems. I’m always constipated, bloated, and throughout the past year I’d have bouts of diarrhea (sorry I don’t believe in TMI). Yeah try going through all of that while working a graveyard shift for 10 hours alone. Not exactly easy to take a bathroom break when patients come in at all hours of the night. For a while I thought maybe I had IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and was almost going to see a doctor about it. I didn’t want to be on medication and figured perhaps I should look into my diet. It was also hard to regulate myself when I was on “work week” vs “play week” where my diet wasn’t as easy to control.

SOOO all of these “issues” made me seek an alternative. I wanted to introduce better foods into my system. I was well aware of what I should be eating and what I put into my body. I enjoy vegan/vegetarian food a lot. And I want to try to incorporate eating raw as much as I can.

My Hippy Dippy Green Smoothie
I decided to start with a green smoothie everyday for breakfast. I turned to my favorite singer, Jason Mraz and his joyologist, Tricia for guidance because I had no clue where to start. I’ve always heard praises of these super green smoothies they drink everyday. I figure it couldn’t hurt to try. I was tired of being sick almost everyday. I went to Whole Foods and got all these ingredients. Man it was expensive! I didn’t really know what I was buying, but I figured that it’ll help me somehow.

My first experience with Health Force’s Vitamineral Green was a bit strong. I kinda of held my breath as I took my first drink. But for the first week I grew to like the taste of my daily green smoothies. I later started to incorporate fresh fruit into my smoothies and needless to say, I am in love! Every morning I wake up looking forward to drinking my smoothie. Did you know that smoothies are my preferred drink of choice? That and tea. Any kind: sweet tea, milk tea, hot tea. I don’t drink coffee, or soda so I’m usually left drinking water or juice. I’ve been drinking my hippy green smoothies for over a month and I have to say that I feel so much better. Long gone are the days where I have nausea at work. Fatty bloated feelings are gone. And I’m super regular! Though I love my breakfast foods, this is an excellent meal to start my day. It keeps me full for a good 5-6 hours.

For the past 3 weeks my diet consisted of: my daily green smoothie, fruit, nuts, edamame, and another super food powder drink. I’ve been very satisfied and didn’t miss eating other foods. It’s kept me very full and satisfied. I didn’t miss eating other foods or had my usual daily cravings. And the best part?  I’ve lost 6 pounds :) Not too shabby considering I’ve yet to incorporate exercise into the equation. That will come next…whenever I decide to stop being lazy :P

My Hippy Dippy Green Smoothie!
Best part was trying to explain my new diet to my dad.

Are you a vegina now? – Dad

Lazy Larchmont Sunday

Sunday morning brunch at Larchmont Bungalow! Home of delicious red & blue velvet pancakes and a ton other deliciousness! This place is apparently a hot spot for celebrities because everytime I go, there seems to be someone…that I don’t know…But a someone to someone else regardless. This time we had Freddie Roach’s trainer? I don’t know, but there were a lot of people on walkie talkies and camera crew.

SF Foodie Adventure! FUN FUN FUN

When I found out that my LA friend Robyn was coming to visit the Bay Area, I had to take her out on a proper food adventure of San Francisco! My food buddy, My, and I planned our itinerary and sent her the list. Overwhelmed was an understatement! We don’t play around yo! Food is serious business!

It wasn’t the greatest time for me to be indulging in food since I had to squeeze my booty into a very fitted bunnie romper the next day…But yeah, that’s a whole other sad story :P

Grilled Cheese Invitational 2011

As an avid lover of all comfort foods that involve cheese, I was quick to purchase my ticket for the 2nd 8th Annual Grilled Cheese Invitational (wait wha?…how can something be the 2nd 8th…whatever…)

The Big Cheese

I attended the event last year, but was just an attendee and thus only able to purchase different grilled cheese sandwiches from the several vendors offered (such as  The Oaks Gourmet, Chef Greenspan’s The Foundry to name a few). They were all delicious, but I wanted to sample the competition that was reserved for judges only!

Chicago Gourmet Food Festival

Once upon a time, My wanted to attend the Chicago Gourmet Food Festival where all the top gourmet chefs of the land gathered in one area to provide a bountiful feast for those who were willing to fork over $150 to wine and dine. I decided it was too expensive for us and we set that dream aside. To our surprise, our fairy god-chef, Mario, granted us with 4 tickets to attend the Food Ball! The Food Mistress was about to attend the food event of a lifetime!

Yes! Latin Section!

Exhausted in Orange County

Man I haven’t done a 12+ hour day at Disneyland in a LONG time and my 25 year old body couldn’t recover. We had made plans to have Bacon Donuts at Nickel Diner in LA, but were far too exhausted to make the journey…It was all for the better because I happen to check online to find out they are closed on Mondays :P How lucky was that?! 50% of the time when I want to eat somewhere, it’s usually closed -.-..You’d think I would learn from the past to always call and make sure the restaurant is open…But nope! Guess I like the element of surprise and failure :P Yanno, live life in the unknown…

So Liz and I kinda passed out on the ground for a few more hours…We eventually woke up and decided to meet White Stephanie in Costa Mesa at The Lab – Ultra Hipster Gathering Hole!
